Not many have noticed it but Whats App has just turned 10 years old recently. This popular chatting and media sharing app was acquired by Facebook in February 2014, celebrated its 10th birthday on Monday.
One of the major reasons for the success of this messaging app is that its available on both Android and iOS platforms. Whats App took the users’ phone numbers and turned it into a social network and solved the problem of discovering other users using Whats App. The app’s user-friendly interface and ease contacts discovery made it slowly forget SMS.
Whats App is regularly being updated with new features like group voice and video calls, unsend messages, location sharing, Whats App status, voice messages etc.
Let’s look back into its decade long journey
2009: First launched in 2009, Whats App was made available for both iPhone and Android users from the start itself. At first, it started as a messaging app and it soon evolved into a media sharing app by the end of the same year.
2010: Whats App introduced Location sharing feature in 2010 on its app itself this allowed its users to share their immediate location with their friends and family.
2013: This year was big for the messaging app as it kick-started Whats App group feature.
2014: In the month of April Whats App achieved its first milestone by hitting a huge 500 million users mark. The same year, Whats App also launched the ‘Read receipts’ or Blue ticks feature.
2015: In January 2015, the instant messaging app launched the Whats App Web for desktop users.
2016: Whats App had was getting more than 1 billion new users every month and also rolled out the much-needed end-to-end encryption to allow users a safe experience. On May 2016, Whats App rolled out its desktop app along with the new video calling feature.
2017: Whats App launches the Whats App status feature which quickly became popular among its users.
2018: By now Whats App had built a strong 1.5 billion user base by January 2018 it also rolled out the Whats App stickers, Whats App Business app and Whats App Group calling feature.
2019: A Happy 10th birthday, indeed!
