When Drishyam entered the 50 crore club in 2013, it was a surprise for all fans of Malayalam cinema. Till that time Mollywood was considered as a very small industry. Even though they were rich in quality, the markets were very less. Therefore today a Malayalam Film entering the 50 crore club and 100 crore club on fourth and eighth day respectively is an unbelievable achievement. They are even beating the collection of Bollywood movies in GCC markets. Movies are made and promoted in large scale. But the biggest factor is still the same. The ‘L’ Factor!
With Lucifer, Mohanlal is literally continuing as the ‘Box Office’ King in Mollywood. He is having the maximum industry hits in Malayalam. Kilukkam was the first Malayalam movie to collect 5 crores. After 6 years, in 1997, Chandralekha from same Mohanlal-Priyadarshan combo became the first movie to collect 10 crores. And in 2000, Narasimham crossed 20 crores, establishing himself as the supreme box-office power. But still Malayalam Cinema waited for 13 years for a 50 Crore movie. Then came Drishyam. The same man again!
After 3 years, Mohanlal came with two 100 crore movies in two languages;-
Pulimurugan and Janatha Garage. He achieved this rare feat of having two hundred crore movies in just one month. Interestingly along with these two, there was one 50 crore movie too at the same time, Oppam.
Today, in 2019, even his less acclaimed movies like Odiyan are having a huge collection. His 10-15 minute cameos leading to 100 crores like Kayamkulam Kochunni. And by Lucifer, Mohanlal is tightening his reign. The fact is that the three 100 crore films in Malayalam have only one thing in common;- “Mohanlal”. In other words, he is having a “Kadavule pole” figure among the fans now.
Lucifer is not just tightening the stardom of Mohanlal. Certainly, it helped in setting a new benchmark for box office success. Above all, Lucifer emerged as a trendsetter for Malayalam films internationally. In the past, even good Malayalam movies were failed to make a mark in global markets. There were only a few traditionally favored international markets. But Lucifer is having an exceptional response everywhere. Kudos to Prithviraj Sukumaran and Team. Prithviraj is certainly encouraging the makers of Malayalam films to explore newer markets.
This success will definitely open the eyes of this industry. It will lead to more big projects. Good Promotion works will follow. And above all, Malayalam Cinema will grow beyond the traditional markets. This will definitely encourage the makers to do huge films.
Lucifer is still dominating the box office, even in its second weekend. Certainly, it is on its way to become the Industrial Hit. The’L’ Rule continues!
