As you all know Mediterranean sea is the world’s largest inland sea and the name is derived from Latin meaning “in the midst of lands“. This is sea is bounded by the continents – Europe, Africa and Asia. This is one of the important waterways. The western civilisation originated here. Extending from the start of Gibraltar to where it joins the Atlantic it is the largest inland sea. You have an outlet to red sea provided by Suez Canal.
This sea includes a number of small seas like Ionian, Adriatic etc. Black is also considered as a part of this sea. There are many islands and island groups scattered across the Mediterranean from Sicily the largest. It has an area about 1,14500 square miles. The Mediterranean is bordered by narrow coastal plains. The major rivers emptying here are Ebro, Po, Tiber etc. The climate here is long hot and dry summers and mild rainy winters.
Agriculture, fishing etc are the chief occupation of people living here. The Mediterranean declined its importance in late 1400’s with the discovery of America and of a sea route to the riches of Eastern Asia. Pollution is the greatest danger that the Mediterranean faces today. However, the Mediterranean is geographically and economically very important.
