“Period, End of sentence“, a film on menstruation in India, directed by the award winningfilm maker Rayka Zegtabchi won the Oscar in the documentary short subject category at the 91st Academy Awards. The movie was produced by Indian producer Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment. The film was executed as a part of The Pad Project, initiated by the students of Oakwood School in Los Angeles and their teacher Melissa Berton. The director of the short film in her acceptance speech said it was unbelievable that a film on menstruation won an Oscar. She appreciated the producer Guneet for her persistent efforts in empowering women all over the world to fight for menstrual equality.
The movie location was set in Hapur village outside Delhi. For generations, women in this village had no access to sanitary pads leading to various health issues. Girls were forced to drop their school education. The revolution begins when a sanitary pad vending machine is installed in the village .The women in the village learn to manufacture and market their own pads and fight against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation.
This is indeed a proud moment for India at the Oscars. Exactly ten years ago, A R Rahman and Rasool Pookutty won the Academy awards for Slumdog Millionaire.
